All four schools have earned the silver level award for Excellence in Nutrition and Physical Activity through the Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge for Smarter Lunchrooms. Only 937 schools across the nation have earned the silver level distinction, and we are proud of all four of our school lunchrooms for earning this level of recognition. The Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge is a voluntary initiative, so all of our lunchrooms have gone above and beyond in order to qualify. The challenge requirements include things like trained food service staff, nutrition education for children, and school / community support of healthy eating and physical activity. Schools that earn this award earn up to $2,000 to enhance the school food service program. The Gilchrist County School District's free meals that are provided to every student already meet the strict nutrition standards set by federal regulations, but BES, TES, BHS, and THS all go a step further are very deserving of this award.
The vision of the GCSD is supported through a positive learning environment, and this award is a testament to the positive culture that exists within each school. Be sure to thank your food service employees for their role in ensuring a healthy environment for children!
