Our A+ Schools
We are very proud of our school system! Gilchrist County is the first and only Florida School District to receive all A’s in the State of Florida school grade system. Our teachers, staff, parents, students, and community members work together toward our vision of achieving “world class” status in public education.
We're #1...Again! Our District was the first and only District to achieve all A's in the Florida School Grade Reports in 2006. In 2007, we are again the only school District in Florida to have all A's!

About Gilchrist County
Gilchrist County is a small, rural county located in North Central Florida. The nearest metropolitan areas are Gainesville, to the East; and Live Oak/Lake City to the North. We are bordered by the Suwannee River to the West, and the Santa Fe River to the North.
Recreational/Leisure Activities
Gilchrist County is known for its numerous outdoor recreation opportunities. Boating, fishing, swimming, and other water sports are popular on the Suwannee and Santa Fe Rivers. The North Florida area is believed to have the largest concentration of freshwater springs on earth. For a partial list of Gilchrist County springs, including several “first magnitude” springs studied by the Florida Geological Survey. See the study here. Plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature await those interested in hiking, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching. Hunting and camping are also popular in our area. More information on the area is available at Pure Water Wilderness, the Dixie-Gilchrist-Levy Tourism Development Board.
Message from the Gilchrist County Chamber of Commerce
Gilchrist County was established in 1925 and is the last county in Florida chartered by the state legislature. Nestled in the heart of North-Central Florida, residents are surrounded by undisturbed woods, natural springs, ponds, and rivers. It is a haven from the rush and bustle of contemporary life -- peaceful and tranquil. Old Timers like to think of Gilchrist County as the Natural Florida, how Florida was "meant to be" before the tourism boom.
Our northern border is outlined by the Santa Fe River, a natural wonder which slips underground in a slow whirlpool near Oleno State Park and reappears three miles away before merging with the great Suwannee River. The historic Suwannee River, made famous in song by Stephen Foster, meanders gracefully, forging the County's western border. These two rivers are punctuated by several world famous Florida springs, including Hart Springs with its long boardwalk down to the Suwannee, Ginnie Springs with its nine clear freshwater springs, and Blue Springs , with its deep, blue waters.
We hope to see you!
